Learn Brazilian Portuguese with Music

Brazilian Portuguese is spoken by over 215 million people in Brazil — the world's sixth largest economy and the largest country in South America. It is the most widely spoken variety of Portuguese in the world, and has its own distinct pronunciation, vocabulary, and cultural identity.

What makes Brazilian Portuguese distinct

Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese (spoken in Portugal) are mutually intelligible but have significant differences. Brazilian Portuguese has more open vowels, different pronunciation of "d" and "t" before "i" and "e" sounds (they become like "dj" and "ch"), and a more melodic, flowing rhythm compared to the rapid, vowel-reduced speech of European Portuguese.

Open vowels

Brazilian Portuguese pronounces unstressed vowels much more clearly than European Portuguese. This makes Brazilian Portuguese significantly easier for learners to understand — syllables are not swallowed.

"D" and "T" palatalization

Before "i" sounds, "d" becomes like "dj" (dia → "djia") and "t" becomes like "ch" (tia → "chia"). This is one of the most distinctive sounds of Brazilian Portuguese.

Unique vocabulary

Brazilian Portuguese has vocabulary distinct from European Portuguese, influenced by Tupi (indigenous languages), African languages, and local culture. Words like "legal" (cool), "saudade" (longing), and "gostoso" (delicious) are part of everyday Brazilian speech.

World-class music

Brazil is home to bossa nova, samba, MPB, axé, baião, and funk carioca — some of the most musically sophisticated popular music on earth.
